Before partaking of any food, a brachah rishonah (preceding blessing), is said. There are six different blessings, each beginnning with the same words, BA-RUCH A-TAH A-DO-NOI ELO-HAI-NU ME-LECH HA-O-LAM, Blessed are You, L-rd our G‑d, King of the Universe, and concluding with a few words related to the type of food eaten. If someone came home from work and ate dates would they recite ha'etz before eating them? Would this suffice for the rest of the meal (not sure the woman preparing dinner should be a relative to the hero by blood and therefore Mizrahi like the protagonist or whether she should be a relative by marriage and probably Ashkenazim).
If relative by blood the dinner would be machboos (rice dish with lamb or chicken), cucumber salad with cherry tomatoes and lime, carrot salad, hummus with iraqi style bread, sharbatzafran and mint tea to drink...
Every food category requires its own blessing.
Thus, fruits = Ha'Etz does not cover vegetables =HoAdama.
Also, the chicken requires a SheHakol.
Regarding the correct bracha for rice, see here.
