Important information regarding excused absences from school for religious holiday observance.
This year, EPISD is subject to the State of Texas 90% attendance requirement, which requires students to attend at least 90% of their classes to receive credit or a final grade for a course.
However, work-restricted holidays are not subject to the 90% attendance requirement and are not counted against a student’s attendance percentage.
According to Policy FEC(Local), the following first-semester dates are exempt from the 90% attendance requirement and will not be considered when determining loss of credit, as they are work-restricted holy days designated by Student and Parent Services.
Rosh Hashanah: September 11-13
Yom Kippur: September 20-21
Sukkot: September 25 - October 2
Shemini Atzeret & Simchat Torah: October 2-4
According to Policy FEA(LEGAL), documentation for this type of absence may consist of a note from the student’s parent or guardian. It is recommended that the note be submitted via email to the campus.
If a student has a testing date or other important academic obligation that falls on a religious holiday not identified as a work-restricted holy day, the student and parent are encouraged to contact the campus attendance administrator to discuss available options within the testing window, including the possibility of completing the assessment on an alternate date.
If the student, parent, and campus are unable to reach an appropriate arrangement, they may contact Student and Parent Services for additional guidance and support.
